IVBCF has agreed to partner with TEDxTemecula as its fiscal sponsor for 2014. TEDxTemecula was spearheaded in 2012 by IVBCF member Jim McLaughlin to bring the brightest minds in our region to a local stage to share their ideas and their innovations with a live local audience, and with the world through the power of online video.
What is TEDxTemecula? In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks videos and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).
“It occurred to me that the perception of Temecula and Murrieta as ‘bedroom communities’ was false,” says McLaughlin. “There are people in our midst that have amazing stories and ideas to share, and the rest of us – and perhaps the rest of the world – should know about them. It’s part of who we are.” So far TEDxTemecula has produced two live events that combined have included 20 speakers and two musical artists.
Besides the live events, TEDxTemecula produces smaller events called salons, where three TED Talk videos on a single theme are chosen and then viewed and discussed as a group. “Most people watch TED Talks on their computers, alone,” says McLaughlin. “It’s an altogether different experience when you can share your thoughts and engage with others.” Both the TEDxTemecula live event and the salons provide this kind of connective experience.
TEDxTemecula approached IVBCF because of its similar mission. TEDx events across the country form partnerships such as this to support their events. “TEDxTemecula is a community-sourced project,” says McLaughlin. “The organizing committee, the sponsors, the speakers, and the attendees all contribute to making the event a success. We’re grateful that IVBCF is helping us to continue to grow the project that will, at some point, bring national and international attention to our region.” IVBCF members will receive a 25% discount to all TEDxTemecula events.
In its second year the City of Temecula became a sponsor. The ideal sponsor is any individual or organization that had a passion for ideas, creativity, innovation and the opportunities they bring about.
